WHAT IS INVOLVED IN AMPUTEE REHABILITATION?

An individualised approach is essential to achieve your best outcomes following an amputation.

  • Pre-Prosthetic training

  • Stump care including pressure care, stump shaping, compression, scar management, desensitisation

  • Contracture prevention and management

  • Gait and balance analysis

  • Prosthetic and non prosthetic mobility training

  • Activities of daily living (ADL) skill training including upper limb myoelectric prostheses

  • Phantom limb pain management

  • Equipment prescription and environmental modifications

  • Community integration including returning to work, sport and driving

PhysioTherapy for amputees:

At Neuro Junction our gym is specifically suited for amputee rehabilitation including specialised equipment such as:

  • Gait and balance analysis treadmill

  • Parallel bars

  • Sliding tilt table

  • Body weight supported gait training device

  • Mobility aids

Our Physiotherapists work with both lower limb and upper limb amputees from the pre-prosthetic stage including stump care, shaping, scar management and desensitisation right through to prosthetic specific gait training including running and agility retraining.

Occupational Therapy for amputees:

Our Occupational Therapists will help you relearn skills needed for activities of daily living using your prosthetic.  This may include activities such as dressing, preparing a meal, shopping, returning to work related activities. Occupational Therapists may use a range of approaches depending on your needs such as education, assistive technology or functional retraining.

Our OT’s will work together with you and your support networks to maximise your level of independence and safety in the community.

Areas where OT can assist following Amputation:

  • Driving assessments and modification recommendations

  • Wheelchair and seating prescription

  • ADL skill training such as personal cares – such as dressing and showering, meal preparation, shopping

  • Upper limb prosthetic rehabilitation and fine motor skills

  • Assistive technology prescription / equipment needs

  • Home modification such as ramps, grab rails, accessible bathrooms as required

  • Energy conservation

We work closely with leading prosthetists to make sure you prosthetic limb fits well and meets all your needs. We assist you in improving your mobility, independence and function with and without your prosthetic. We work alongside other professionals such as surgeons, rehabilitation specialists, pain management physicians and clinical psychologists who may also be involved in your care.
