Brain Injury

What is a brain injury?

Ours brains control everything we do; from moving, talking and thinking. A brain injury can therefore affect many aspects of our day-to-day lives from our ability to get up in the mornings, go to work, look after children and carry out daily activities.

A brain injury may be acquired or traumatic in nature.  The effects of the brain injury can be wide ranging depending on the location, severity and type of injury that has occurred.

Brain injury symptoms will vary from person to person. Therefore it is essential your health professionals have knowledge about your injury and work together with you to understand the impact on your life and plan your treatment goals.

Brain injury effects may include:

  • Poor balance and mobility

  • Reduced strength

  • Fatigue

  • Loss of independence with daily living tasks

  • Altered sensation

  • Change in muscle tone / spasticity

  • Reduced upper limb and hand function

  • Changes to cognition such as memory, concentration, problem solving

Neuro Junction offers clinic based and community rehabilitation in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy.  Your therapists will complete standardised and functional assessments and will design a specific treatment plan to meet your individual needs and goals.

PhysioTherapy

Our Physiotherapists are experienced at working with complex neurological disorders and are passionate with assisting you to improve your skills for every day living.  A comprehensive assessment will be carried out to identify your strengths and limitations to form a client centred treatment plan.

Depending on your needs, Physiotherapy can work on improving your muscle strength, balance and coordination to achieve improved outcomes in your mobility, ability to transfer from bed or chair, walking in the community and upper limb function.

Your Physiotherapist may also provide education and recommendations around manual handling, spasticity management and postural supports. You may be recommended assistive technology such as orthotics, braces and supports or mobility aids.

Should your brain injury also involve vestibular pathways which affect your balance our experienced vestibular physiotherapists can assess and provide interventions to help with these issues.

Treatment may be provided at your home, at a local pool or gym or at a sporting venue or local park dependent on what your interests and goals are.
